What you need to know

The causes of breast cancer are not fully understood. Although it is clear that age, gender and lifetime exposure to estrogen and other factors play an important role. Because no one knows exactly what  causes breast cancer, there are no sure ways to prevent it.

However, there are steps that you can take that may reduce your risk. These include maintaining a healthy weight, adding exercise into your routine and limiting alcohol intake. For women at higher risk, tamoxifen or raloxifene may be taken to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Who gets breast cancer?

Anyone can get breast cancer. For example, did you know…

• The older a woman, the more likely she is to get breast cancer?

• White women are more likely to get breast cancer than women of any other racial or ethnic group?

• African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than white women?

• Men can get breast cancer? Out of every one hundred cases of breast cancer, one will occur in a man.

If I am diagnosed with breast cancer, what are my chances of surviving?

In general, pretty good. The 5-year survival rate for all women diagnosed with breast cancer is 89%.  This means that 89 out of every 100 women with breast cancer will survive for at least 5 years.  Most will live a full life and never have a recurrence.  Your chances of survival are better if the cancer is detected early, before it spreads to other parts of your body.

Did you know that there are nearly 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States today?

As always, thank you for your continued support.
